How Chatterbox is produced

The art and layout work for all early issues of Chatterbox, starting with No.21, was compiled on an Apple Macintosh using AppleWorks 6. Subsequently a change was made, for a short period, to Canvas X, but this product has sadly lost its development support and maintenance, and now, starting with the 2006 Winter Issue (No. 39), Apple Pages is being used to compile the magazine on an Intel iMac.

Pages allows the importation of page layouts as pdf's, so our system makes it possible for many people to submit page layouts for inclusion into the master layout (you can follow the links from "Contribute your item" on the left of this page if you would like to know more about this). Once the compilation is completed and has been proof read, the final copy is transferred to disk as a pdf for transfer and input to our desktop Mac Mini, and thence to our printer. Having successfully secured funding to purchase a new Konica-Minolta Bizhub C253, supplied and maintained by Highland Office Equipment, we are now able to print colour and B&W in one operation and the distribution of colour-printed pages through the magazine has been freed up. The first issue to be printed on the new machine was No.45, in the summer of 2008, and we are now settling into a routine 44 page magazine with 16 of its pages in colour. More colour is, of course, possible, as determined by cost restraints.
